I love this section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Joseph has received a
revelation for his wife, Emma.
I read it often- because it reminds me of who I can become.
"Be faithful and walk in the paths of virtue"
President Hinckley once said that the Lord was referring to our being "faithful to ourselves, to the very best that is within us! No woman can afford to demean or belittle herself, or to downgrade her abilities or capabilities."
GULP! It's as if he knows I am guilty of this!
"Be faithful to the great, divine attributes that are within you!"
"and thou shall receive the Holy Ghost"
What a beautiful gift- to comfort us, prompt us, teach us, testify to us. With the help of the Holy Ghost, I believe that we can be successful at all that is expected of us.
"And verily I say unto thee that thou shalt lay aside the things if this world and seek for the things of a better"
To paraphrase Pres. Hinckley- It is not by accident that we are here- right now- at this time- in our own particular circumstances. Each of us has been uniquely positioned to participate in specific, significant ways in building the Lords kingdom.
I also LOVE this from Elder Holland-
"Asking every member to be a missionary is not nearly as crucial as asking every member to be a member!"
This is why I love this section of D&C. It reminds me to be a member! - to have faith in my ability to be the best I can be, to realize the divine attributes that can be mine, to seek to have the consistent guidance of the Holy Ghost, to lay aside the things if this world and strive for better.
Amazing- right?

The truth is........
I guess its time I fessed up and told the awful truth about my goal.
I did give away the earrings- but I struggled- things didnt go as planned for me.
The problems started when I personally addressed envelopes for everyone I know and love. If you know me- you were about to be the recipient of a fine new pair of earrings. (unless your a man:)
Thats when my brain started second guessing every thing- maybe she wont like these- or maybe the other pair are better for her, or are her ears even pierced, or she could really hates these, I should buy cuter beads. Maybe they will think I am weird or stupid or untalented, she could be ungrateful, she might not even know who I am. Do I mail or deliver, send one pair or more because she might not like what I think she will like-
Soon, the giving was turning into a nightmare- LITERALLY!
This is how the nightmare went-
There was a snake in my ear- the head in my ear canal and the little body hanging out. At first I didn't mind it because it kind of made sense in a weird way- it blended with my hair and it wasn't really bothering me.
People said "Shelli, you need to get that out of your ear right now- don't let it become comfortable there."
I didnt listen and as time went by the snake was quite comfortable hanging out of my ear. It began to weigh more and soon I couldnt hear well and it didnt blend so well with my hair as it became longer and fatter. (I dont remember worrying about what the snake might have been eating in there- obviously my brains! DUH!)
Back to the dream- it took some very professional surgeons to remove that snake- and I felt so free once it had left me!
I thought about this in relation to the earrings- I let the snake get in my ear- the doubt, the fears, the concerns of what others would think- and then I let it get good and comfy- I wouldnt let anyone sway me! I was sure that my friends and family members deserved better than what I had to give and nothing could change my mind. In the end- I took the earrings to a family party and just let them take what they liked- but I left quickly so as to not hear their comments. Stupid snake in my ear!
IF I decide to something like this again- I will watch for that snake and maybe get it outta there before it requires professional help!
For now- that's the way the story ended!
On to the next learning experience!
Bring it- but be nice and lets leave the snakes out of it this time okay??

170---
Previously I vowed to personally make and give away 170 pairs of earrings.
Here's a quick update on my goal.
I have given away a little over 90 pair so far- and I have had a few experiences that have made me stop and think about the gift of giving!
I have learned that it is really hard to give something to someone that will not appreciate the gift. Obviously you don't know that they will not appreciate it until you give the gift- and then the deed is done. Lesson learned- Some people just don't like to receive gifts. Sad, but true!
It is really fun to give something to someone when they are not expecting it- and they love it! It makes giving easier. I learned this when my earrings went on a journey to a retirement home. I did not personally know these ladies, but I LOVE the elderly, wise women of this world! I LOVE learning from them and laughing with them. These were the most grateful women that I have encountered so far, and a great experience for me! My mom also took some to the Retirement home she works at and the ladies there were so sweet!
And I have saved the best for last. I will soon be sending out the remainder of the earrings to family, friends and some ward members.
I hope it goes well!
As far as making the earrings, I have completed the task.
The work is really in the giving!

170 years=170 good deeds
I haven't posted for awhile for a few reasons.
Mainly because I have been stewing over a challenge that was informally issued by one of the beautiful ladies that I serve with in my calling.
She is talented, amazing, loving and always does whats right- and since the Relief Society is CELEBRATING our 170th YEAR as an organization, she is knitting 170 hats to donate to the homeless shelter. She is awesome. And I want to be like her.
So I have been stewing over this. I have talked to her because I needed a little pep chat- a little boost to give me ideas. She said "Do something that you enjoy doing- that's why I chose hats. I like doing it and I would probably do it anyway- so why not donate them?"
Great.
I cant think of anything that I enjoy doing that would benefit anyone but me- jogging, cleaning, camping, reading-
So- "Do what you do naturally, only do it more often- and keep track- do it 170 times."
Now that's EASY! That is something I can do ladies!
My hair is naturally messy-easily 170 days in a row!
I naturally freckle in the sun- I bet I could get 170 new freckles in no time!
I am naturally VERY clumsy. I have taken a few good tumbles already this year- But if I set a goal to increase that, Ross will make me wear a helmet whenever I leave the house (and probably around the house too)- so I say NO to this one!
The mom in me naturally tells Jayce to zip up his pants AT LEAST 4 times a day- that could work!
Things like "Don't sit on the furniture with food! Pick this up! Have you finished your chores? Is your piano done? Why is this dirty when I just finished cleaning it? Are you kidding me? What were you thinking? Where are you going? When will you be home? Who let the dogs out? Why is your scooter in the house?" These things are part of my daily routine- and I could easily pump it up to 170 times- no problem!
So- you can see why I am having a problem with this.
Doing things that would benefit me spiritually- like reading my scriptures daily, praying, fasting, reading the Ensign- these are things that I should do already- I must do! I love these things and I need these things in my daily life- and for some reason they seem so sacred and personal that I can't even place them into a goal that is meant to be shared with/ or uplift others.
I want my goal to be something from my heart and real and also challenging.
And its a strange one but it is truly from my heart- and real- and challenging!
I am making 170 pair of earrings and giving them away!
The challenge is that I will NOT purchase new beads or supplies- I WONT I WONT I WONT! (its a bit embarrassing to admit that I actually have enough of both to do this- but I just love buying new supplies! Its going to be hard to keep myself away from the bead store!)
Each pair will challenge my creativity and take some time- (giving up some TV time and Facebook time for this!)
Each pair will be a gift of thanks to the women that inspire me to be a better person! I know there are at least 170 of them out there.
I will let you know I am doing as I go. And I hope that you can find 170 Somethings that you can do for others before the year ends!
(Just as a side note- My cute Kelcey was underwhelmed by my choice of service- her comment was "Great, I guess I will be getting 170 new pairs of earrings!" But I may surprise you, my dear- I have given away 20 pair's already. Now I just hope those same 20 women like earrings cuz a few more pairs could be coming your way:)

2 Nephi 2:11
"For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so...
righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness or misery, neither good nor bad...."
If not for opposition, agency could not exist. We are often reminded that agency is not free. Agency allows me to participate in the testing process that is a fundamental part of this earthly life. There is a cost associated with agency- the cost is personal- it is damnation or salvation, depending on how I choose to use my agency. My choice is clear, but I often ponder as to why a person would choose to become an enemy to righteousness.
Satan himself was endowed with this beautiful gift of agency, yet he stands today as an enemy, an adversary to all that is good and right.
I love this reminder from Peter, stating
"Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." Peter 5:8
So, I find myself feeling amazed at the right that I have to agency, overwhelmed at the thought of all that I am capable of gaining if I use that agency properly-
and- because I am human- and also because I happen to be in the process of raising children- I often find myself wondering how my Father in Heaven could trust me with this gift of agency-
as a mom, I want to believe that my children will always make great choices- and then there are days when I wonder WHY that is an option for them- I would rather make that choice for them, because I believe I can see the consequences much more clearly than they can, or because I don't want them to suffer, or hurt, or feel sadness.
Surely my Father feels the same with me as I wander through this life of opposition- as I use my agency, as I succeed and fail and learn.
He must trust me immensely, and see more in me than I see in myself- and with that example in mind I will try to be a better person, and a better parent!

The Worth of Souls
Yes- the topic is having a repeat visit- for 2 reasons.
1) I have been assigned to talk specifically about self-worth at an upcoming leadership meeting. (I have complained plenty about this- WHY give me this topic- nothing could be more difficult for me than self-worth)
2) After my original post on "the worth of souls", a sweet friend thanked me for reminding her of her worth, and invited me to not forget my own worth. (Dang- I had not thought of that- I was basking in the worth of others!)
I have been considering this, my own worth- since then.
If I had to come up with a list of things that I cannot do well, I could manage to have a pretty lengthy list. But to consider myself worthwhile? HMM
It is so easy to find worth in others. Not so easy to find it in ourselves.
This speaking assignment is beginning to feel impossible! SERIOUSLY!
I have a thought that I am trying to put into words- let me know what you think, PLEASE!
Suppose I handed you a piece of cloth. It is paper sack brown and corse (think of one of those old potato bags)- and if we had the responsibility of making this cloth into something beautiful, say an evening gown- what would come to your mind. I'll start- just in way of cutting out a pattern and sewing- this cloth would be
DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH
and wearing it- some descriptive words that come to mind-
IRRITATING
PRICKLY
UNCOMFORTABLE
The gown itself, as a finished project, may be considered
PLAIN
NO PERSONALITY
UGLY
Basically, using this type of cloth for something it was not intended to be used for can make the cloth itself seem unsuccessful.
BUT- If I were to use it as it was intended, say, for a potato sack, the words to describe it would change- the cloth would then become
STRONG
DURABLE, or capable of enduring
PERFECT, really-
And on the other hand- if I were to take a beautiful piece of satin or silk- and try to make a pair of winter stockings out of it- that cloth would be-
UNWILLING TO STRETCH
it could SNAG, or RUN EASILY
it would be COLD,
SLIPPERY,
Unworthy of winter sock wear- but in the event that I used that cloth to make something beautiful- a dress, frilly pajamas even, that cloth would be
COMFORTING
SOFT
DELIGHTFUL
So my thought is this- aren't we all somewhere in the process of becoming what we were intended to become. When all is said and done- I believe that my Father in Heaven intends for me to be Strong, capable of enduring, Comfortable with who I am, Delightful even- but for today, I am caught somewhere in the process of trying to become what he intended for me to be. Some of those descriptive words, whether I like it or not, may be who I am. Prickly, irritating, hard to work with, plain, ugly, cold, slippery- I suppose I even run into a snag here and there. These descriptive words are harsh- hurtful even- which makes me wonder if I ever used one of these words to describe another of my Fathers children.
If so, I have been so wrong- they too are in the process of becoming what they were intended to become- maybe they are in the prickly part, or the unwilling to stretch part. We must remember that we are all working to become what we were intended to be .... BEAUTIFUL!

2 Nephi 26:32
"And again the Lord commanded man........................ That they should not envy......"
Oh, there is much more to this scripture that I should not do- But I recently found myself in need of this commandment- "They should not envy."
I was sitting in Cafe Rio in St. George at lunch time- carefully guarding a table for my little family. The previous night had been one of those sleepless nights that I often have, so I was tired. My family had been enjoying the warm sunshine and the beautiful scenery filled with two days of long hikes. I also knew that my sweet sisters would be meeting today for lunch in Salt Lake to plan a very important event. I had been invited, but was out of town and couldn't attend.
So as I looked around, I began to envy the three year old little girl who was still dressed in her purple footie pajamas. I doubt that one person looked at this beautiful little girl and thought "Why is she still in her pajamas?" She was smiling and happy and completely enjoying her food and family. Envy came creeping in- and I thought- I wish I were in my purple footie pajamas (and yes, I do have a pair)- my hair a mess and a huge smile on my face- I envy this little girl.
My envy was disrupted by loud laughter- and I looked at another table where three older women sat- all laughing. It was obvious from their matching white hair and their lipsticked smiles that they were sisters. I envy you three cute women, I am missing my sisters.
That's when my own eight year old nearly knocked me off my chair- he had been talking and I obviously was not listening.
But this little moment of envy threw me off a bit. I am not usually one to want what others have. I have always thought it a sweet blessing that my nature is to be very content with where I am- with what I have. I felt even more concerned for my soul when I found little to no direction on the subject of envy- does this mean I am hopeless? Helpless?
Coveting seems a bit dramatic of an explanation and I don't feel that the description of coveting really applies here- " to have an eager, extreme or ungodly desire for something."
In fact, the desire to be comfortable, surrounded by the people that I love and admire- it doesn't seem such a bad thing to wish for. And when i finally snapped out it, I realized that is exactly what I had at my little table at Cafe Rio- My cute family, whom I love and admire!

D&C 18:10
"Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God."
My focus right now is completing the Book of Mormon- but along the way my Father in Heaven has found opportunities to teach me and to remind me that his work is being done today, in my life and in the lives of others. I told you that I get caught up in the history of the BOM- I try not to- but it happens and I have been wandering around in a BOM haze- I have the Jaradites on my mind one day and then the destruction, wars and contention rattling around in my head the next day, and then comes the admonitions of righteous fathers to wayward sons- Oh I love this book. But I love also that we are taught today by a Prophet and by good and righteous men and women- who are called to lift us and admonish us.
Last Sunday I was lifted out of my BOM land as I was reminded of Elder Cooks conference address on "Looking Up"- and I needed this- and I am going to tell you why- and I am NOT proud of myself!! My sweet sister came to stay over night on Saturday. She was struggling with some things and because I love her- I was happy to help. Only I didn't really help. Sure, I entertained her with stories from my own life experiences, which in no way compare to what she is going through- we laughed and made cookies and played with the kiddos- and then I went to church and was reminded of this great talk from Elder Cook- And I wanted to just slap myself.
WHY, when my sweet sister needed encouragement, didn't I remind her to look up- why didn't I encourage her to find peace and comfort from her Father, who loves her so much. When I returned from church, I took a moment to tell her that I felt bad that I had not given her this encouragement. And we giggled, because that's what we do- but I want her to know that no matter what, looking up is the best thing to do. I know from personal experience that my Father in Heaven understands us, loves us, and wants us to know that we are of great worth to him. ALWAYS. He loves you! So, now that I have that off my chest, one more experience from this week that reiterated the "Worth of Souls" to me.
With my calling I have the opportunity to visit with the sisters at the Metro Jail for their week day R.S. meeting. This week our lesson was about abuse- tough subject for many of these woman- and I planned on shedding many tears- which I did- but not for the reasons that I had expected. I knew their stories would be difficult to hear- the circumstances (being in jail- awaiting sentencing) are certainly difficult- but to my surprise the sisters shared very little about themselves and how the subject of abuse related to them. And when they did share- they spoke of their "worth"-
I sat in the corner and cried.
What else could I do?
These sisters whose lives to you or I would seem complicated at best- chose to focus on the fact that they are worthwhile daughters of God. Not that they were- or that they could become worthwhile- but that they ARE! And they are so right! Our Father doesn't say that I am more worthwhile than another- or that another has greater worth than I- but that each soul is of GREAT worth. WOW! What a great week for learning it has been for me!
Becoming humble-
This may seem like a strange post- but, the truth is that sometimes life is strange. Its been a few very busy months since I wrote- and I have plenty of excuses, trust me! But the real truth of the matter is this. I just wanted to read my Book of Mormon! It was weird- I love choosing a topic and studying it, but I was really having a bad day one day- and when I went to bed I just didn't want to study- plain and simple- it didn't sound fun, AT ALL. So I just picked up my scriptures and started to read. And I couldn't stop! Normally I cant do this because my brain wants to timeline everything and I get really caught up in the history of it all and I tend to miss the spiritual teachings- so studying a topic works best for me- I thought--
and then this bad day hit and I picked up the scripture and read- I don't know when the lightning struck me- but somewhere in ALMA- and after the lightning came the peace and the stillness and the knowledge that all will be well in my world.
When i think back on the day- I cant recall what it was that had turned the day bad- but I absolutely know what set it right!
so with out further explanation from me---
The scriptures teach us that "becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love, and all long suffering." Alma 13:28 are essential- especially if we would like to qualify for celestial blessings.
In learning of humility I found that "humility is REQUIRED of all engaged in gospel service- it is an essential attribute for all that serve the Lord."
Meekness and patience run right along side of humility-
We might think of a meek person as one who is weak- but the truth is that our Savior was meek and lowly, yet he forcefully and dynamically drove the money changers from the temple. Being meek does not mean we are weak, rather that we are willing to do the will of our Father. We are not fearful, timid and spiritless. Not us!
In latter day scripture, D&C 67:13 we are told that we must ......."continue in patience until ye are perfected." I know that I was sent here to suffer, overcome, be tested, tried- all of that good stuff, and, even better is that there will be rewards for enduring without complaint- and even through enduring will come humility and meekness- those traits that I long for.
Its beautiful how these traits (or virtues) work together, building upon one another to form us into the Saints that we need to be.
It's not surprising that being "full of love" would make us more charitable, more willing to serve, more reverent, tender and kind, compassionate.
And to be long-suffering would closely mimic patience in all things.
Now for the hard part- applying this to my life today!

Gifts
I have had this subject on my mind ever since I was asked to speak at a baptism about the Gift of the Holy Ghost. As I prepared I ran across an article that stated "most of us do not understand the gifts that we have been given, and we therefor do not fully utilize these gifts." This is not referring to "talents"- but specifically to spiritual gifts (or gifts of the spirit).
I know that in my own life, my own world- I do not take time to ponder on these gifts. The Gift of the Holy Ghost is quite amazing. To know that if I choose to be obedient, I can have this comforter, testifier, and teacher near me always- that's not a bad gift to have. As I searched further into the gifts of the spirit I made note that the common denominator for each (spiritual) gift is OBEDIENCE. Mormon Doctrine states "Certain special spiritual blessings called gifts of the spirit are bestowed upon men. Their receipt is always predicated upon obedience to law "
Obedience is possible because of two things.
1)Laws- ordained by Deity so that his children by conforming to laws might progress and become like Him.
2)Agency- God endowed each child with the ability to obey or disobey the divine will of our father. Agency has existed from the beginning.
Our Savior demonstrated the perfect formula for obedience when he stated "Father, thy will be done and the glory be thine forever." Moses 2:4
So, knowing that obedience is the gateway to which I can receive spiritual gifts- gifts that are purposely provided to enlighten me, encourage me, to edify me, to guide me toward eternal life, to bring me peace- I should without doubt always chose obedience.
And when I review the list of gifts that my father can bless me with- I feel even more encouraged to obey.
Please note that each person does not receive the same gifts- life would be so boring if we were all the same. Nevertheless, these gifts are beautiful. Each gift alone is precious.
The gift of Faith, including the gift to heal and/or be healed
The gift of Testimony
Knowledge, revelation, wisdom, the gift of teaching, ministry, the working of miracles, prophecy, visions, beholding of angels and ministering spirits, the gift of discernment, tongues, interpretation of tongues, translation--
These are in no way all of the gifts available to the obedient. We have been told that the gifts are infinite in number and endless in their manifestations.

JOY
I wondered if I would find time during this life time to just sit down and type a few words- life feels so busy, and I can only assume with the holidays fast approaching, the busy-ness will only increase- which means that the free time will decrease- but I wanted my sweet daughter (who is the most important reader) to know that I have continued my studies of the scriptures and good books through this busy time- and I am not bragging- I have continued because I have had to- first there was that stake leadership meeting that I had to prepare a 30 minute talk for- YIKES- and then the baptism that, purely by default, I had the privilege of speaking at. So what I am trying to say is this- there is such joy that comes from serving our Father in Heaven.
And in my world, I sometimes let the stress of fulfilling that responsibility overwhelm me and then I honestly over look the joy. I have tried to calm myself (which is no easy task) and truly look at the joys-
the JOY of learning (Like when I am forced to prepare talks)
the JOY in listening (this month I am turning off the radio in the car- and just listening. To Jayce. While he talks up a blue streak. And I am loving it. Mostly. But I am also leaving the radio off when I am alone and just listening. To the spirit. or to myself sing a hymn. or to myself talking to myself. Its surprisingly relaxing.
the JOY in being a daughter! I Love my mother. I tell her this often. Even when she doesn't know who I am. I know her and love her. (Funny story- when I call my mother and say HI this is Shelli- she goes into this "Shelli who? I don't know any Shelli's" I feel that I have to positively identify myself- birth certificate, Social Security #, Drivers License- Before she says- "OH SHELLI!" Funny Lady!
Only it doesn't always seem so funny- but still I love her. I love being a daughter!
And that brings me to this-
Being a Daughter of God!
There is such JOY in knowing that I am a daughter of GOD! He knows me, loves me- and he NEEDS me to be the best daughter that I can be!
When I read the words "Are you living up to your privilege?" I wonder to myself- Do I really understand what that privilege is- DO I completely understand what it is that I have the potential to become? I realize that I have a lot to learn- much to do- much to accomplish. And it can be overwhelming. It IS overwhelming! But it is also AMAZING!
So it may be obvious that I have received and have been reading "DAUGHTERS IN MY KINGDOM"
I hope you have your copy! I hope you read it and LOVE it! It is a sweet blessing!

Thou Shalt Not
I love this talk- given in 1971 by Elder Sterling W Sill titled "THOU SHALT NOT"
1971 was a long time ago- but still these words touch me! I first read this talk when I was studying the Ten Commandments. I wanted to know how these commandments fit into my life- or even if they were relevant for today. My study was extensive- and I learned so much- and I can tell you that YES! these commandments are very relevant and very necessary for today.
In a nutshell- Elder Sill states this:
If you were contemplating starting a new business, one of the first steps to be taken would be to decide definitely on those things that should NOT be done under any circumstance. There are certain dishonest and improper practices that should be definitely and permanently ruled out of bounds- in advance. The same would be true in a marriage- there are dis-loyalties and infidelities that must never be entertained.
"WHEN ONE HAS DEFINITELY ELIMINATED THOSE THINGS HE WILL NOT DO, THEN HE CAN CONCENTRATE ALL OF HIS TIME AND ENERGY ON THE THINGS HE SHOULD DO"
There was once a minister on a radio show who stated that he never spoke of the Ten Commandments- one reason being that they were dated. The other reason he mentions is that the language is too harsh. He suggests that maybe God would have better luck with his children if he did not command- but maybe if he used kinder language such as I suggest, or I recommend or I advise you to follow these commandments.
I, for one, disagree with Mr. Minister.
These 67 words can be read in 30 seconds or less- yet IF they were followed, they would quickly transform our earth into Gods paradise.
1)Thou shalt have no other gods before me
2)Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images
3)Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain
4)Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy
5)Honour thy father and thy mother
6)Thou shalt not kill
7)Thou shalt not commit adultery
8)thou shalt not steal
9)Thou shalt not bear false witness
10) Thou shalt not covet
These are the things that God has placed "out of bounds" and frequent visits with these words will help keep us on the path the He has paved for us!

Mosiah 1:5
...."were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, that even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief".....
Isn't it incredible that we have these words to guide us?
I read a quote last week on facebook that I just cant get out of my head.
"What if you woke up tomorrow with only the things that you were grateful for today?"
This has me re-evaluating gratitude. If I woke up tomorrow with what I am grateful for today I would have the scriptures. I am grateful for many things in my life- as we all are- but to know that these words have been preserved by my Father- so that I can learn, so I can understand, so I can have the commandments before me always- that is pretty awesome!

Hebrew 5:8-9
"Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all that obey him."
My chosen word "atonement" has had me studying and learning and, yes, I admit- crying more often than normal. I cannot place into words the reasons that this word "atonement" sets me into tears- but, why not? Jesus Christ, my brother, did something for me that I could not do for myself. He suffered for me so that he could, in turn, advocate for me. He paid a price for me and my happiness that no person I know would be willing to pay. He LOVES me! It is amazing and beautiful and absolutely more than I can fully comprehend!
As I studied I became fascinated with the idea of OBEDIENCE. We have all heard the song "By strict obedience Jesus won."
And I actually took a little turn in my testimony- thinking that Christ was simply being obedient to His Father- and somehow that equaled atonement for me. Sometimes I am an idiot!
The laws were in place from the beginning- Sure Christ was aware of those laws and of the need for a redeemer- He absolutely knew that we were dependent upon his desire to be obedient.
He was not forced to apply himself, he was not in anyway forced to "do his fathers will."
He chose to be obedient.
He CHOSE IT!
And in turn, that application of pure obedience on his end led to a great deal of suffering- unimaginable for you and I- yet he stuck to it and finally when the battle was won he didn't jump up and down and shout "I DID ID!" He kindly and thoughtfully said "I did this for you, I hope you will accept this gift!"
I love this man! I will forever and ever feel grateful for the atonement!

D&C 76:40-42
"And this is the gospel, the glad tidings, of which the voice out of the heavens bore record unto us- That he came into the world, even Jesus, to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; That through him all might be saved...."
The week before conference I began my scripture study of the atonement. The General Women's Conference came and added to my thoughts on the atonement- and then the week flew by. I have struggled to find the time that I want to spend studying this. General Conference also added to my desire to truly understand the atonement.
This is a word that I will study for at least a few more weeks- there is so much to learn!
The word ATONE means to ransom, repair, to satisfy, to reconcile, redeem.
My poor brain. It must define everything- so I begin with ransom.
A ransom is the release of a person in return of payment. I have heard and sang those beautiful words- "That so fully He ransoms me" and I have always thought of this as a payment, a gift really, that Christ gave to me through the atoning sacrifice- but I had not yet placed myself in that as the person being ransomed, the person being released-
Christ freed me!
He released me of sin.
Of course there are steps that I must take to receive the full blessings of that ransom, but that is a small price to pay in comparison to the price that Christ paid for me.
As I study I read many articles that help me to understand the "word" that I am studying. The following I share with you from Elder Kikuchi:
"Imagine, in the center of the universe, our loving and kind Heavenly Father must have wiped His holy tears. Imagine the great gratitude of the Father for His Son’s willingness to give Himself for all of the Father’s children. The Father could have sent multitudes of the hosts of heaven to rescue His Son from that awful situation. But our Father must have closed His eyes in those final moments in order that you and I and other sons and daughters could have hope."

PANIC
I looked it up in Mormon Doctrine- It says "Panic is a sign of the times."
I cant say any more today. It's time and I have to get it done!

Work and Recreation
Two words that work well together.
First of all- THANK YOU for your comments! Learning from you is so wonderful!
Now back to work and recreation- actually my mind has been on work all day- not because I love work, but because I have so much to do at home that I felt certain that Heavenly Father would prefer that I be home today cutting out the zillions of leaves that are needed for the upcoming Stake Relief Society dinner, or preparing the food for the same dinner- or maybe he would want me cleaning the house that barely feels lived in this week- because we are always running to something other than home.
I stuck it out at work- leaving just an hour earlier than I would have on a normal, less stressful day. I used this extra hour to pick up enough groceries for 21 batches of Greek pasta salad (which required stops at two grocery stores- why cant one store have EVERYTHING that I need??)-divided it into thirds and delivered it to two- keeping one third for myself, ran home to put my third into the fridge, picked up Jayce from school and skidded into the parking lot at Murray Park just as the game began.
I love my soccer girl! So watching a 2 hour game felt amazing- but in the back of mind there is this little thought. I have been grumbling all day about having to work when I have so much that I need to do at home- but when its soccer time, there is no place I would rather be. I wonder to myself if my Heavenly Father would approve of my work vs. recreation attitude. So I did some reading. Mormon Doctrine states that "recreation is an essential and vital part of the gospel- a gospel that makes provision for every need of man, both temporal and spiritual.
After a person has performed his assigned or appointed labors- both in making a living and in service on the Lord's errand- it is edifying, relaxing and proper to enjoy the diversion of wholesome recreation." That is good to hear!
Now about work. This was a very humbling study for me. I was reminded that work is not just a burden that Shelli carries each day- it is a great basic principle which makes all things possible both here and in heaven. I feel silly for complaining about the work I have to do when all around me there are men/women, spirits, angels that are engaged in the work of our Father in Heaven. I was reminded of our Savior who went about doing the work of his master saying "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." (John 5:17) Yep- I think I read that right- "MY FATHER WORKETH..." .
After all he has already done for me, he continues to work. I haven't heard Him complaining. I feel certain that He has reason to complain, but He just continues on so that much can be accomplished.
Like I said, I am humbled! We work because it is required for our progression. There is always work to be done. That will not change. And I bet He takes a break for a few hours here and there to catch a good soccer game!
Welcome
to "Love the Words I Love"
This is a very personal scripture journal.
The purpose of my writing it is to share with the family that I love these words that I have come to cherish.
I have a life- a busy life! And I have attained this amazing gift of "The Wandering Mind." Maybe you've heard of it. I open a book and suddenly my mind has wandered to mundane silly matters, like how much more laundry I have to do, or the lawn that I should be mowing, maybe the craft I wish I could begin- or finish. The worries and concerns of my everyday life just wont let my brain focus on what I am reading.
I haven't found a cure for the brain problem- but I have found a way to make these words mean something significant to me. It took time, it took patience. There was some motivation involved as well.
I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but I haven't always felt that I BELONG. There was a time when I really questioned my belief system. That was one of the most difficult times for me but I can honestly tell you that I am grateful for that time in my life. I call it "the trial".
Its one of those things that everyone has but nobody wants!
So today's scripture journal entry: TRIALS
I, for one, do NOT love the trials of life. But I can appreciate what can be gained from those trials. Mormon Doctrine states that "we have been placed on this earth in a mortal body for the express purpose of undergoing trails, including hardship, suffering and temptation. This is particularly true of the saints."
I remember the first time that I read these words, and I was curious as to WHY such trials would be true of the saints. The obvious reason is that we know WHY we are here! We KNOW what we must accomplish! We have made promises to a Father who loves us, and we have no doubt that he will fulfill his end of those promises-so we must work to fulfill ours.
And then finally there is this beautiful scripture. D&C 136:31
"My people must be tried in all things, that they may be prepared to receive the glory that I have for them...."
That sheds a whole new light on my trials- I am being prepared to receive the glory that my Savior has prepared for me!
I THINK I LOVE IT!
